How to choose a coworking space

Before the pandemic the coworking trend was already underway, but it has boomed since then. Lockdowns and new ways of thinking about what constitutes a workspace and work necessities has led to a big upheaval in how we work and do business.

Coworking spaces and hybrid spaces are, as a result, on the rise to meet this new demand. And the rise of freelancers and digital nomads are further fueling the increased demand for coworking spaces.

To meet this demand, many new coworking spaces have sprung up in Madrid, but how to choose? Here is a guide to what to consider when looking for the right coworking space for you:

1.     Location

Location is always going to be one of the main deciding factors in your decision. Unlike having a traditional office, with so many coworking spaces in Madrid you can choose the one that is most convenient for you, boosting your productivity. So if you live in Arganzuela, Area Coworking is the space for you in Madrid!

2.     Budget

Everyone has a different budget in mind for their coworking space, so just bear in mind up-front costs(these vary considerably in Madrid) as well as additional benefits such as meeting room use, printing and drinks.

3.     Vibe

Likewise, we all have different tastes when it comes to sharing a workspace – some people will like a quiet environment whilst others prefer more vibrant spaces to share ideas and socialize.

Some coworking spaces allow pets whilst others do not, so if you want to bring your dog to work make sure to check their house rules first.

Make sure to visit a coworking space during peak hours to get a feel of the noise levels. At Area Coworking we offer free day trials so you can try before you buy!

4.     Security

When choosing a coworking space make sure that it is safe and secure – to avoid having to lug your computer and other belongings there and back each day.

Look for modern access control systems for convenience combined with strict security, especially ones that can be opened through an app on your phone. This way security will never get in the way of your productivity.

Also look out for places that have a 24/7 security guard, free lockers, and an on-hours receptionist.

5.     Facilities/extras

Coworking spaces will all offer a range of amenities that may or may not incentivise you to choose them. Anything from free tea and coffee, showers, kitchen facilities, bike storage…

Cleanliness is obviously a must, so presentable bathrooms and kitchens will be essential. And then there is printing and internet connection – make sure to test the wifi when you first arrive with something requiring a fast internet connection (e.g. streaming/downloading files).

And then there are social amenities – for some people games, sport, yoga, and activities will be important, for others they would rather just stick to the work.

6.     Tech

To increase security and productivity, most good coworking spaces in Madrid will now offer up to date technological innovations. As well as access control, there should be cloud-based printing software, and an easy online booking process for desks and for meeting rooms.

7.     Other

Sometimes you just need to go with your gut! Ultimately a coworking space is made by the people that run it and work in it. Some will feel more corporate, others more low-key, so make sure to do a trial day to work out which is the best for you.
