The Area Team
We’re Hugo & Jack and you’ll find us at AREA Coworking Madrid because it’s small and proudly
independent - we’re part of the community.
We're originally from the UK and have lived in Madrid for several years. Between us, we've lived in London and
around South America, before making Spain our home. We speak fluent Spanish and English.
If you need legal advice Jack’s your guy, he’s basically a shrink for start-ups.
And if you need help with anything audiovisual, Hugo has a background in film production.
We also have a dog, Rufi, who isn’t much use for anything other than patting.
The Project
Central Madrid isn’t famous for its industrial aesthetic, so when we came across
an old warehouse made of concrete we decided to make the most of it.
AREA was originally a warehouse used to store power tools - it was going to need a lot of work.
We worked with architects Aleatoria to create a stripped back look that reflects the
building’s origins and maximised natural light. We also installed state-of-the-art,
energy-efficient air conditioning and filtration systems to reduce the risks of Covid-19.
To facilitate a smooth transition from co-working space by day to events space by night,
furniture makers Mesarte devised bespoke drawbridge-style tables operated by
hydraulic pistons. Mesarte also crafted all AREA’s desks and tables.
We wanted to create a space that is design-led, sustainable and Covid-secure.
We’ve tried out co-working spaces around the world and know what works and what doesn’t.
We’ve drawn on our personal experiences to try and create the perfect environment for our members.
